Dark Horse

What is a "dark horse"?

From the ever reliable Wikipedia: "Dark horse is a term used to describe a little-known person or thing that emerges to prominence, especially in a competition of some sort." I see it as someone unexpected who surprises their opposition by coming out of nowhere to become victorious. It is mostly used to describe politicians in the modern era.

Where did the term come from?

It was originally used in terms of horse races. The Big Site of Amazing Facts says that a horse trader named Sam Flynn mixed a black racing stallion in with his workhorses and entered him in a local race. He bet heavily on the horse, knowing full well that the stallion would win.  This coined the expression “Beware the dark horse.”

Who were some of the "dark horse" presidents?
